Chile's Top Coastal Towns
Stretching over 2600 miles, Chile is practically all coast. The hospitable hosts, excellent infrastructure, and amazing sights make Chile a must-see during your South America vacation. Here are the country's best coastal towns that will allow you to enjoy the Pacific's full splendor.
Valparaiso: Overlooked until 2003 when UNESCO named Valparaiso a World Heritage Site, people are beginning to catch on to Chile's best-kept secret. The colorful city was built into chaotic hills, which overlook the busy commercial and naval port below. In every corner there is something interesting: a flea market, a stunning mural, a rustic restaurant, and a fascinating museum.
Isla Negra: Famous Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda, chose an ideal location for his beach house south of Valparaiso in Isla Negra. His beach retreat is filled with trinkets that caught his eye like colorful paperweights. The area surrounding his beach house is bound to catch your eye. The rocky shoreline is filled with shingled cottages that will remind you of coastal Maine more than coastal Chile.
La Caleta (Pan de Azucar National Park): This beachside national park is located in the Atacama Desert. You can camp in the tiny town of La Caleta surrounded by the beautiful beach to the west and the dry Atacama to the east. The town has a mere two restaurants and a mini-market for stocking up on essentials, but has plenty of fun. There are secluded campsites and party campsites, as well as boat tours and an excellent view from the mirador.
Algarrobo: The tall waves and extensive beaches provide a welcome beach retreat south of busy beaches. You can swim, kayak, or raft all within a protective alcove in Algarrobo. You can walk for miles on the beach to find the perfect spot to lay out. Sneak a peak at the San Alfonso del Mar, a private condominium resort that houses the largest swimming pool in the world.
Viña del Mar: Popularly known as the Ciudad Jardín (Garden City) for its lovely subtropical boulevards lined with palm trees and green parks. Viña del Mar is where Santiaguinos flock for a beach weekend. If you don't mind a crowd, the beach and boardwalk offer a good time. You can watch sand sculptors create their art, cool off with a yummy ice cream cone, browse the seaside market, or surf the Pacific.
La Serena: Chile's second-oldest city is blessed with beautiful architecture, but the highlight of La Serena is the long golden shoreline. Avenida del Mar, a coastal road, provides access to at least 10 noteworthy beaches.
