Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common behavioral disorder in school-aged children. The American Psychiatric Association (APA) estimates that 3% to 7% of school-aged children have ADHD. However, researchers who study large community-based populations estimate that up to 10% of school-aged children are affected—a significantly different figure. Other disagreements exist as well. For instance, according to the APA, clinical reports place the ratio of boys to girls with ADHD at up to 9 to 1 (9 boys for each girl). At the same time, community researchers guess that the actual ratio of boys to girls is more like 3 to 1.
